Dairy farmers voice concerns at federal forum (AUDIO)
As their industry faces its worst crisis in decades, the nation’s dairy farmers appear to be finally setting aside their regional disputes. More than 500 people attended a Dairy Workshop, convened by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Justice, on Friday at the Memorial Union of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dairy farmers from around the country put on a unified, during a forum with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney. California dairy farmer Joaquin Contente said prices per hundredweight are the worst in decades. “The average price for 2009 in the United States was around $12.80. In my area it was a lot lower than that. We all needed at least $18,” Contente said during a panel discussion.
Cause of Milwaukee parking garage collapse unknown
The investigation continues into what caused part of a Milwaukee parking structure to collapse, killing a 15-year-old boy and injuring two other people.
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke says 15-year-old Jared Kellner of Greenfield was killed Thursday afternoon when a 27,000 pound slab of concrete fell from the facade of a parking garage along the lakefront. [Read more...]
Dems slam Walker on pension plan
State Democrats want Scott Walker to “put his money where his mouth is.”
Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker last week announced part of his plan to get state spending under control is to require all state employees to pay their own portion of their pension benefits. And, if elected governor, he would do the same. But, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate says that’s just a “P-R stunt.”
Tate says while Walker served in the state Assembly, Wisconsin taxpayers shelled out nearly $18,000 toward his pension. “We are asking for Scott Walker to pay back to Wisconsin taxpayers the $18,000 we have contributed to his pension from his time in the legislature. [Read more...]
