Geoff Jenkins to retire as a Brewer

Former Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Geoff Jenkins will formally announce his retirement from baseball in a press conference this Friday (July 9) at Miller Park.  Jenkins will later throw out the first pitch prior to that night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jenkins was drafted by the Brewers, made his Major League debut in Milwaukee and established many team marks on the field.

Jenkins played 11 Major League seasons, 10 of which came as a member of the Brewers.  He debuted with the Brewers on April 28, 1998 and was named a National League All-Star in 2003.

Jenkins ranks among the Brewers all-time leaders in nearly every offensive statistical category, including home runs (2nd-212), slugging percentage (2nd-.496), RBI (4th-2188), extra base hits (4th-521), doubles (4th,287), at bats (5th-4407), runs (5th-661), hits (5th-1221), games (6th-1234), on base percentage (6th-.347), batting average (T7th-.277) and triples (8th-22).

Anaheim on July 13th.  Ryan Braun was elected to start in the outfielder while Corey Hart and Yovani Gallardo were named as reserves.

Braun led all NL outfielders in voting with nearly 3 million votes.  He will be the first player in Brewers history to start three straight All-Star Games.  Robin Yount and Paul Molitor each started two start games, but never three.

For Hart, it’s his 2nd All-Star nod.  He was selected via player ballot.  With 19 home runs Hart will also compete in the Home Run Derby the night before the game.

It’s Gallardo’s first All-Star selection. The Brewers pitcher’s status for the game is unknown after leaving Sunday’s loss to St. Louis with a strained left oblique muscle.

Brewers Lose Game, Gallardo

The St. Louis Cardinals earned a series split with the Brewers on Sunday with a 7-1 win over Milwaukee.

The third inning was a nightmare for the Crew as St. Louis scored five unearned runs off of starter Yovani Gallardo. The floodgates opened after a pair of errors by Alcedes Escobar.  Late in the frame, Gallardo left with a strained left oblique muscle.  He’ll be evaluated today by team doctors and may miss his next start.  Corey Hart hit his 19th homer for Milwaukee’s only run. Gallardo drops to 8-4 with the loss.  Adam Wainwright improved to 12-5 with the win.

The Giants come to town to open up a three game series this afternoon.  Dave Bush will start against Johathan Sanchez.  They will throw the first pitch at 3:10pm at Miller Park.
