Plea deals reached in FDL embezzlement case

Charges have been filed against three individuals involved in a sophisticated embezzlement scheme that targeted former employees of the Fond du Lac Management Information System Department. And almost right away, a plea deal has been announced in the case.

Two of them are former MIS employees Jonathan Lippert and Jason Wianecki. Emil Devcic a vendor, was also charged. They’re accused of taking part in a scheme that used up to $240,000 to buy and sell electronics. [Read more...]

Ex-Im Bank moves forward on Bucyrus deal

The U.S. Export-Import Bank has taken the first step forward to provide loan guarantees for sale of Wisconsin built mining equipment. The bank, the official export credit agency of the federal government, has approved proceeding to a full review for financing of U.S. exports for a coal-fired power plant project in India. The proposed $600 million Ex-Im loan guarantee will support the sale and export of mining equipment produced by South Milwaukee based Bucyrus International for use in the project. [Read more...]

Appeals court upholds gun restriction for domestic violence offenders

Advocates for domestic violence victims applaud a federal appeals court ruling which could restrict access to guns for domestic violence offenders. The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed the constitutionality of a federal law prohibiting people with domestic violence convictions from owning firearms. Opponents argued U.S. Supreme Court decisions on local gun laws in Chicago and Washington D.C. rendered such restrictions unconstitutional, but Tony Gibart with the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence said that’s not the case. “What the 7th Circuit said is that the Supreme Court indicated that laws that restrict . . . felons from possessing guns are presumptively constitutional,” said Gibart. “The 7th Circuit abided by that Supreme Court language and upheld the gun restriction.” [Read more...]

Craigslist bomb seeker arrested

A Craiglist posting by a Madison man got more attention than he probably wanted. He was looking for a mechanic to build an explosive device. What he got was an undercover ATF agent, to whom 76 year old Jansson Wheeler offered $500 for an explosive device. “Mr. Wheeler actually placed an advertisement on Milwaukee’s Craigslist, looking from someone to put together . . . an explosive device,” said Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain. “An ATF agent contacted Mr. Wheeler, and indicated he would put together a bomb for him.” [Read more...]

Biker to stand trial for Janesville homicide

A motorcyclist suspected in the fatal shooting of a motorist following a dispute at a Janesville intersection last month has been bound over for trial on a charge of first-degree reckless homicide. James M. Humphrey of Janesville appeared in Rock County Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

The 44 year-old Humphrey is accused of shooting 30 year-old Sam Aegerter of Janesville after a confrontation on Friday, June 4, while both were stopped for a red light at Janesville’s Five Points intersection. According to the criminal complaint, Humphrey was riding a motorcycle, and Aegerter was a passenger in a Jeep. [Read more...]
