State unemployment continues to decline

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate decreased for the third straight month in June, according to new figures from the Department of Workforce Development.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Wisconsin was 7.9-percent last month, down from 8.2-percent in May and well below the June 2009 rate of 8.9-percent. [Read more...]

High marks for UW Hospital & Clinics

UW Hospital and Clinics are ranked in the top 50 U.S. hospitals in seven medical specialties. That’s according to the 2010 edition of U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals” guide, something UW Hospital and Clinics Chief Operating Officer Ron Sliwinski calls an affirmation of the work people do every day. “There’s a lot that goes into rankings, they’re not a perfect measure, but they’re a very public way of acknowledging the work that people do,” Sliwinski says. “We did have high expectations to do well. Tough luck for Stricker & Kelly

Conditions were ideal early on at golf’s 3rd major, the British Open.  Light rain fell from time to time, but there was no wind to speak of.  Players playing early took advantage.

The arrest of a Catholic priest in the Diocese of La Crosse for possession of child pornography has sparked renewed criticisms of the way in which the diocese has handled the cases of accused priests. Agents from the Wisconsin Department of Justice arrested Father Patrick Umberger after finding child pornography on his computer, according to a DOJ press release. “Obviously we’re at a point here with this arrest, where something has to be done to get into diocesan files and review . . . what is going on in this diocese,” says Peter Isely with the Midwest chapter of SNAP – the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.
