Hard court, hard core

Wisconsin hosts bike polo teams from around the nation this weekend. Bike polo is a sport that’s been growing in popularity in Madison and elsewhere. Event organizer Jonny Hunter says the Madison bike polo club put in a bid last November to host the North American Hard Court Bike Polo Championship tournament, and was the overwhelming choice. “The sport’s been growing very fast, and Madison has been part of that,” Hunter says. “Our club (Mad Bike Polo) isn’t as big as others, but we’ve been participating in big tournaments and doing well. We’re respected in the scene.”

Problems with contract sunshine website detailed

The head of the Government Accountability Board says there are some issues with getting state agencies to comply with a contract sunshine law.

The law passed four years ago requires state agencies to report the details of contracts worth at least $10,000, which are then posted online. A review by an Appleton newspaper earlier this year found only 14 of 89 agencies had anything listed on the site though. [Read more...]

Play suspended in 2nd round at British Open

The second round of the British Open had a wind delay early and nobody went under par when play resumed.  Enough time was lost though to force suspension of the 2nd round, which means some players will go back out early tomorrow morning to complete the round.

Luis Oosthuizen shot a 5-under par 67 to go 12-under for the tournament.  He’ll take a 5-shot lead over Mark Calcavecchiainto the 3rd round tomorrow.

The projected cut line was at -1 early on.  As conditions got worse, that line went to 1-over par.  That means Madison’s Steve Stricker, who shot a 2-over par 74, settled at +1 for the first two rounds.  That will keep him around for the weekend.  Fellow Madison native Jerry Kelly will head home early.  Kelly shot a 3-over par 75 to finish the first two rounds at 10-over par.

Tiger Woods shot a 1-over par 67 and heads into the weekend at 4-under par.

indefinitely without pay for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Jolly’s suspension begins immediately and will continue through at least the 2010 season.  He’ll be eligible to apply for reinstatement following Super Bowl XLV.

Jolly is due in court July 30th to face a felony drug possession charge, the same day players are to report for training camp.

Jolly, who signed a restricted free agent tender with the Packers in June worth $2.521 million, was arrested in the early morning of July 8, 2008, in the parking lot of a Houston club.

Jolly was pulled over because of excessive noise coming from amplified bass music and waa arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance (codeine).

Packers General Manager Ted Thompson issued the following statement:  “Johnny is a good player that loves everything about the game of football.  We appreciate the contributions he has made to the Packers the past four seasons.  His focus and priorities now lie elsewhere – our thoughts are with him during this difficult personal time.”

Rain eases northern drought conditions

Summer rains are easing drought conditions in northern Wisconsin, but more moisture is needed.
