GAB won’t roll over for bad ballot language

The Government Accountability Board has rejected a candidate’s questionable statement of principle on the November ballot. Ieshuh Griffin, an independent legislative candidate from Milwaukee, argued that the phrase NOT the “whiteman’s b***h”, should have been allowed to appear under her name on the ballot. “I’m stating that in my point of view, the average politician is a token,” said Griffin. “And, a b***h is not a person, it’s a dog, a female dog that rolls over.” Griffin said the politicians who’ve represented her part of Milwaukee have done nothing but roll over. “I’m stating that I’m not going to be a roll over. It’s specifically geared towards the demographics that I’m hoping to represent,” she said. [Read more...]

Suspect dead, said he wasn’t going back to jail

A man involved in a deadly standoff in Dane County was adamant about one thing: he was not going back to jail. Sheriff Dave Mahoney says the suspect was in violation of parole, and was also under investigation for felony sexual assault. Mahoney says the 47 year-old man, whose name has not been released, had barricaded himself in the basement of a home he shared with his mother and stepfather in the Village of McFarland. The man, says Mahoney “had indicated to family and friends that he very well may be shooting this out with law enforcement.” [Read more...]

GAB knocks four candidates off the ballot

The Government Accountability Board has decided four candidates will not be able to appear on the ballot for the September Primary or the General Election in November.

The Board ruled that Republican Andrew Wisniewski in the 25th Assembly District, Republican Paris Procopis in the 13th Assembly District, and Independent William Tucker in the First Congressional District did not submit enough valid signatures on their nominating papers. [Read more...]

Giving property taxpayers a year off

Many homeowners typically pay their property tax bill using escrow, with a monthly installment included in their mortgage payment to help settle the bill in December. A Republican candidate for governor wants to give them another option.

The proposal from former Congressman Mark Neumann would give property owners the option to switch to a monthly payment plan directly to their municipality, starting in 2012. If they agree to the change, Neumann wants to give allow them to keep all of the money they owe on their 2011 tax bill. [Read more...]

Community to implement bullying fines

Police in a Rock County community hope a new ordinance provides some financial incentive to keep bullies from turning classmates into victims. Milton Chief of Police Jerry Scheutz says localizing the state bullying law gives police an intermediate step to hold people accountable, without necessarily entering them into the criminal justice system. “It’s a strong message we’re sending to say you can’t do this because it’s against the law. There’s a state law against it, there’s a city ordinance against it, and if you harass people in our community, if you bully people in our community, that you’re going to be held accountable.” [Read more...]
