Local GOP official calls campaign’s attitude contemptible

Don Zimmer, chair of the Republican Party of Manitowoc County, sees a problem with the candidacy of Andrew Wisniewski, a GOP candidate in the state’s 25th Assembly District. “We think that Mr. Wisniewski is not really a Republican, and that this is a ploy by the Democrats to take votes away from Mr. Ziegelbaur,” Zimmer says. That’s Assembly incumbent Bob Ziegelbaur, who recently bailed out of the Democratic Party to declare himself an Independent. This week the Government Accountability Board ruled Wisniewski did not have enough valid signatures to be on the ballot, but reversed itself the next day. Zimmer finds fault with the Wisniewski campaign.

Old World Wisconsin reopens

Just a month after a tornado did widespread damage at Old World Wisconsin, the state historic site is ready to open again.

On the night of June 21st a tornado touched down and moved across the grounds of Old World Wisconsin, downing nearly 2,500 trees and damaging several historic structures. Since then, director Dawn St. George says they’ve been working to repair the damage. [Read more...]

Benefits extension shot in the arm to Rock County

Approval of additional unemployment benefits from Congress will immediately help dislocated workers in Rock County. “It’s our understanding that the benefits will be extended for those that were reaching the limit,” says Bob Borremans, Director of the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board. “There were 1500 people in Rock County that would have been noticed within the last couple of weeks, that they would be losing those benefits. And so there is an immediate benefit on approximately 1500 folks.” Many of the 1500 people affected lost their jobs through the recession. WMEP reports some good news

The Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership is a private, nonprofit consulting organization committed to the growth and success of Wisconsin manufacturers, and executive director Mike Klonsinski says the good news is they continue to see manufacturers move out of survival mode into growth mode. “There’s no magic bullets, but a lot of the work that people have invested in is paying off,” says Klonsinski. He says companies that have made long term commitments to improve are coming through the recession and well positioned to grow. “Our assitence has generated about $164 million worth of beneficial impact to them,” Klonsinski, including $102 million in retained sales and $30 million in cost savings. Not only that, but 973 jobs were created and retained during the past fiscal year, according to annual economic impact data compiled for WMEP. [Read more...]

Southern Wisconsin pounded by storms

Southern Wisconsin was hit hard by storm activity that including a stretch of tornadoes, thunderstorms and flooding late Thursday afternoon into the evening.  Six-to-eight tornadoes were reported throughout the state from Ridgeway to Racine County.

“So far it seems like damage from tornadoes have been relatively minor. Most of the damage seems to be from the flooding,” said Wisconsin Emergency Management spokesperson Lori Getter. The National Weather Service is sending out survey teams to determine if there were any tornado touch downs, and assess possible damage. [Read more...]
