Attorney: Felon firearm possession law too broad

A Central Wisconsin attorney has filed a brief in support of his motion to dismiss a weapons charge on constitutional grounds. 29-year-old Daniel Rueden of Spencer is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was set to plead to the charge earlier this month, but instead, attorney William Poss filed a motion to dismiss the case, claiming that state statute is too broad; especially in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the right of citizens to own guns in the interest of self-defense.

State’s seat belt use improves

Nearly eighty percent of Wisconsin motorists are buckling up now, according to the latest survey numbers from the Wisconsin State Patrol. That sounds great, but compare it with Michigan’s 98 percent safety belt use rate. Any chance Michigan is fudging those numbers? “We’ve been wondering the same thing,” says Dennis Hughes with the Bureau of Transportation Safety. “But I’ll take their word for it. There are several states that are reporting in the high nineties, it’s not just Michigan.” [Read more...]

shareholders meeting on Thursday as an invited guest of Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy.  Goodell’s told the crowd of nearly 8,300 shareholders that the league’s #1 priority is to reach a new collective bargaining agreement.  Goodell also said he’s optimistic about reaching a new deal.

The Packers financial numbers would indicate that changes have to be made when a new deal is reached.  The Packers finished the fiscal year with a $5.2-million profit, but team President Mark Murphy said the Packers were burdened by the explosive growth of player costs.  The numbers show that player costs had grown at twice the rate of the team’s revenue, which hit a record $258-million last year.  Murphy said local revenue, which totaled just over $100 million, has flattened out. Wisconsin kids exposed to secondhand smoke

Too many Wisconsin kids are still being exposed to secondhand smoke. Recent research shows Wisconsin children are exposed to secondhand smoke at a rate 40 percent higher than the national average. “What they found is about ten percent of kids in Wisconsin are in households where adults are smoking,” says Dr. Nathan Jones of the UW Carbone Cancer Center. “That translates into about 139,000 kids in the state who are being exposed to smoke.” [Read more...]

Heroin, crack and fights…all part of a Janesville bar

The operators of McStaggers bar in downtown Janesville won’t be able to apply for a liquor license for a year after relinquishing it. Police Chief Dave Moore says the bar had many disturbances, multiple fights and an incident where a DJ was selling heroin there. When arrested he had a prohibited weapon. Moore says police were also concerned that after the arrest the DJ was allowed to remain an employee there.
