Hoffman saves 599th as Brewers sweep Pirates

Trevor Hoffman earned his 599th career save and Ryan Braun went 4 for 4

with a home run as the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with an 8-4 win on Sunday.

Hoffman entered with one out and two runners on base in the 9th.  He retired both batters for his 599th save.  Hoffman said he’s love to get save #600 in front of the home crowd.

Hoffman lost his closer’s job to John Axford earlier in the season, but manager Ken Macha has allowed Hoffman to get some opportunities in the past few weeks.  But Macha said there’s no guarantee Hoffman’s next chance will come at home.

The Brewers scored all 8 of their runs in the first 3 1/3 innings off of Pirates starter and loser Charlie Morton.

The Brewers open a series in Cincinnati tonight.

It’s back-to-school time across Wisconsin

Deadline approaches for No Call list

Time is running out to sign up for the latest edition of the state’s Do Not Call list.  The deadline is Tuesday to put your home or cell phone number on the October update to the list, which makes it so telemarketers know not to call. Division of Consumer Protection Administrator Janet Jenkins says over 2.1 million Wisconsinites are on the list. [Read more...]

Rock County boy dies in farm accident

An 8-year-old Brodhead boy died after a utility vehicle accident in Spring Valley Township, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Department. At 8:02 p.m. Saturday, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, along with Orfordville Police, Fire and EMS, responded to a report of a utility vehicle accident in a farm field at 5746 S. Holden Road in Spring Valley Township. When they arrived, the boy was not breathing and unresponsive. Initial investigation shows that the boy had been driving a John Deere Gator XUV southeast on a field access lane when he lost control, failed to negotiate a curve and rolled down a 6-foot berm. Brothers walking to amend Constitution (AUDIO)

Two brothers are walking across the U.S. to urge action on a constitutional amendment. Laird and Robin Monahan are both Vietnam veterans, both in their sixties, and both outraged by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which overturned the provision of McCain-Feingold barring corporations and unions from paying for independent political ads. “Corporations are an efficient economic tool,” said Laird, 69, at the Capitol on Friday. “But a Supreme Court that puts an economic tool above human beings will guarantee our exclusion from representative government.” Laird says we need a constitutional amendment stating that corporations aren’t people. “That’s what we have to tell all of the governing bodies of all of our municipalities. That if they can’t support a constitutional amendment to abolish corporate personhood, they aren’t representing us. They aren’t loyal to we the people.” [Read more...]
