On this date in baseball history

On this date in baseball history, August 26, 1987, Milwaukee Brewers all-star Paul Molitor saw his 39-game hitting streak come to an end.

What made this one even more interesting is Molitor might have had one more chance to extend the streak.  He was in the on deck circle when Rick Manning drove in the game winning run.  The fans booed Manning as Molitor’s streak ended that day.

18-game schedule has its warts too!

Most NFL fans I’ve talked with, favor an expansion to 18 regular season

games.  It’s a reaction that’s expected.  Fans in Green Bay currently have to buy the preseason game because the Packers sell out every game.  With a waiting list in the tens of thousands, they can force ticket holders to buy the home preseason games, or forfeit their right to the tickets.

Naturally, those ticket holders don’t want to lose the regular season privilege, so they pony up.  If the NFL goes to 18 regular season games, fans will still be shelling out the same amount of money, but they’ll feel better about spending the average $63.00 price per ticket because the game means something. Man guilty of violating premises law

It’s the first guilty verdict for violating Wisconsin’s premises registration law.

Thirty-nine year old Patrick Monchilovich of northwestern Wisconsin will have to pay a $390 fine after declining again to register his premises. The Cumberland man pleaded no contest, and was found guilty Tuesday of violating Wisconsin’s premises registration law. Whether there will be further action is not yet determined. “You know, we don’t really know how we’re going to proceed on that one. I guess there’s always the possibility of additional charges but we don’t know.” [Read more...]

2-out runs continue to hurt Brewers

The Los Angeles Dodgers made it back to back wins over the Milwaukee Brewers, pulling out a 5-4 win at Miller Park on Wednesday night.

Again, 2-out runs proved to be a problem.  Of the 5-runs scored by the Dodgers, 3 of them came with two outs.  According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, entering Wednesday’s game, the Brewers had surrendered 243 two-out runs this season, 5th-most in the majors.

Randy Wolf was the responsible party last night, suffering the loss.

On the day the Dodgers placed Manny Ramirez on waivers, he doubled twice, walked twice, drove in a run and scored a run.

The final game of the series is this afternoon.

Clay named to Doak Walker watch list

Wisconsin Badger junior running back John Clay has been named one of 49

RB John Clay

candidates for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.

Clay is the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.  He led the Big Ten and ranked eighth in the country with 1,517 rushing yards in 2009.  His 18 rushing touchdowns also led the Big Ten and tied for seventh in the nation.

Clay has also been named to the preseason Watch Lists for the Walter Camp Award and Maxwell Awards.

This is the second straight season Clay has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List.  Ron Dayne is the only Wisconsin player to win the Doak Walker Award (1999).
