Workers for a Dane County appliance make are facing some big questions about the future of their jobs.

About 200 employees at Wolf Appliance in Madison recently rejected a company demand for a 20-percent cut in pay and benefits. Now, the company is threatening to move those jobs to Kentucky. [Read more...]

Write-in campaign launched in Senate race

An effort is underway to get a former U.S. Senate candidate’s name back on the ballot. A website launched this week is urging voters to support Terrence Wall in the Republican primary later this month, by pledging to write-in his name on the ballot.

Wall dropped out of the race earlier this summer after Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson received the Republican endorsement. The Madison-area developer says he has nothing to do with the write-in effort. [Read more...]

The new high school in New Richmond is the centerpiece of the largest school construction referendum ever passed in Wisconsin, and students entering the new building for the first day of classes on Thursday seemed a bit overawed by the school’s size. “It’s really big, too big,” said one. “It’s really big and confusing,” was another’s reaction. “I’m sure there are things that keep popping up,” said Principal Jeff Moberg. “We’ve got a number of people who are just helping put out some of the fires and making sure things are working the way we want them to, and I’m sure in a couple of weeks we’ll have things smoothed out. Moberg, who for the last four years has doubled as principal and liaison with contractors working on the new school, added that the high school is “about 99 percent complete.” [Read more...]

Kagen kicks off campaign

Democratic Congressman Steve Kagen has officially launched his campaign for the Eighth Congressional District. The two-term incumbent held a kickoff event Wednesday night the Radisson Paper Valley hotel in downtown Appleton. Kagen says he’s stood up to Wall Street and backed Main Street during his time in office. “I voted to make sure that we have jobs here in America, not overseas,” Kagen told WHBY. “I voted just several weeks ago to close the tax loopholes that these corporations use to ship our jobs overseas. Republicans voted against it.”

Kagen says he’ll continue to fight for his constituents if given the chance. “People have to answer the question, whose side is Doctor Kagen on? I will fight my heart out to prevent the privatization of Social Security and the destruction of Medicare, as some extreme Republicans have attempted to do and have said they will do, when and if they take over the House of Representatives.” [Read more...]

Brewers swept by Reds

The Cincinnati Reds extended their lead in the NL Central to 8-games over the slumping St. Louis Cardinals.  The Reds capped off a 3-game sweep over the Milwaukee Brewers with a 6-1 win on Wednesday night.

Left-hander Aroldis Chapman hit 103 mph on the radar gun during 1-inning of relief, retiring the Brewers 1-2-3 and earning his first major league win.

Chris Narveson was cruising along for the Brewers, throwing a 2-hit shutout in the 7th.  But manager Ken Macha removed Narveson, who watched the bullpen blow the 1-0 lead and the game.  Ryan Hanigan’s pinch-hit, three-run homer in the 7th off of Todd Coffey (2-3) was the game winner.

The Brewers are off today and will open up a 3-game weekend series in Philadelphia on Friday night.
