Obama unveils $50b infrastructure plan

The President pitches a $50 billion jobs plan, and accuses Republicans of being obstructionists.

Speaking in Wisconsin, President Barack Obama talks about rebuilding America’s roads, rails and runways. “Make long overdue investments in upgrading our outdated, our inefficient national infrastructure.”

Acknowledging there is no silver bullet to fix the economy, Obama promises to fight for the middle class, despite criticisms from his opponents. “Some powerful interest who’ve been dominating the agenda in Washington for a very long time and they’re not always happy with me. UW connecting students with smart phones

A growing number of UW-Madison students are bringing smart phones with them to school, according to a recent campus survey. The university is hoping to take advantage of the growing presence of the technology by launching its own smart phone application later this fall. [Read more...]

Brewers end 5-game slide

Prince Fielder clubbed his 30th homer of the season to help lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Brewers salvaged the final game of the series and put an end to their 5-game losing streak.

Randy Wolf turned in another solid pitching performance, going 6 2/3 innings, allowing 2-runs on 7-hits. 

By reaching 30 home runs, Fielder becomes just the second Brewer player to reach 30 in four straight seasons.

The Phillies saw their 5-game win streak come to an end and they remain 1-game behind Atlanta in the race for the National League East crown.

The Brewers open up a 3-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals today.

Stricker looking to defend Deutsche Bank title

Madison’s Steve Stricker heads to Monday’s final day of the Deutsche Bank

Open trailing leader Jason Day for 4-strokes.  Stricker shot a 4-under par 67 on Sunday. 

Day was one better, shooting a 5-under par 66 to take the lead, 1-shot better than Brandt Snedeker and 2-shots better than Luke Donald.  Stricker is tied for 3rd with Charley Hoffman 4-shots off the lead.

Phil Mickelson is 5-shots off the lead and Tiger Woods is 10-back entering today’s final round.

Obama visit — not just about the economy

It’s important to understand how much President Barack Obama wants to influence the November elections, so says Mordecai Lee, Political Science Professor at UW Milwaukee.

Lee says Obama needs to get U.S. Senator Russ Feingold reelected, and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett into the governor’s office — not just for the sake of helping out his fellow party members. “There’s another layer to that, and that’s that Obama, thinking about running for reelection two years from now, would like to have in place, in a state that is a swing state like Wisconsin, both a U.S. Senator who’s Democratic and a governor who’s Democratic.” [Read more...]
