A conference aimed to prepare churches dealing with domestic violence wraps up today. Faith based groups and the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WCADV) have partnered for this first ever gathering in Oconomowoc.
Sass says Treasurer plays vital role
Republican candidate for State Treasurer Kurt Schuller has been campaigning on a platform of working to do away with the office if he’s elected. Democratic incumbent Dawn Marie Sass is arguing the move wouldn’t actually save the state any money though.
Sass says the duties of her office would still need to be carried out, which would likely require an administrator to fill her position. She says such officials typically make over $100,000 a year, while Sass makes a salary of about $65,000. [Read more...]
Democrats making last minute push
With a close contest for Russ Feingold’s U.S. Senate seat and polls showing Democrat Tom Barrett trailing in the race for governor, party leaders are hitting the streets and phone lines this weekend to try and rally voters to their candidates.
Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chairman Mike Tate says over 4,000 volunteers will be out knocking on doors and making phone calls in the final days before next Tuesday’s election. [Read more...]
High winds persist
For the second day in a row, high winds continue to pound many parts of Wisconsin. The National Weather Service continues to report wind gusts of 50 miles an hour or more in many parts of the state.
Lori Getter with Wisconsin Emergency Management says utility customers seem to be suffering the most from the effects. Major electrical providers say thousands of customers are still without power. In northeastern Wisconsin alone, Getter says almost 70,000 customers were left without power throughout the day. [Read more...]
Teacher candidate faces teachers union opposition
A Republican candidate running for the 52nd State Assembly seat finds his greatest challenge isn’t necessarily from his opponent, but rather fellow teachers. Jeremy Thiesfeldt is a teacher and coach at Winnebago Lutheran Academy in Fond du Lac. Late last week a political action committee known as Citizens for Fox Valley Jobs filed with the State’s Government Accountability Board. Their only contributor is the Winnebagoland Uniserv PAC, which represents teachers unions in the Fond du Lac area. “They have set up a front group as some sort of disguise to attack my campaign” said Thiesfeldt.
