Kind responds to pay-for-play charges

U.S. Congressman Ron Kind says recent pay-for-play allegations being raised against him are just a last-minute attack by his opponent.

Two doctors from Eau Claire’s Oak Leaf Surgical Hospital sent signed affidavits to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, claiming Kind’s local office required the hospital to come up with $10,000 in campaign donations, in return for a visit from Kind three years ago. [Read more...]

Stem cell researchers defend their work

Concerns raised in the race for governor about embryonic stem cell research are prompting members of the industry to speak up.  Republican candidate for governor Scott Walker says he wants the state to support adult stem cell research, instead of work using embryonic stem cells.

While Walker will not say if he’d support a ban on using stem cells derived from human embryos, he has said he would shift state resources away from the work in favor of studying adult stem cells if he’s elected Governor. [Read more...]

Public hearings scheduled for home canning rules

After a season of operating under temporary regulations, it’s time to make the rules permanent for home canners.

Wisconsin had always required that canned food offered for sale be prepared in a licensed, commercial-grade kitchen, according to Donna Gilson at the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. But last winter the state legislature passed a law making some exemptions. “You sell at farmers markets and community events like church bazaars. You know, you don’t set up an Internet site and you don’t whole sale your stuff to stores in the area. You’re just selling direct to customers on a very small scale.” [Read more...]

State, Tribes cooperating on transportation (AUDIO)

The state and tribal governments pledge to continue cooperation on transportation. Representatives from the state’s eleven federally recognized Tribes, the Federal Highway Administration and Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi signed a new DOT Tribal Partnership Agreement at the State Capitol. Busalacchi says such cooperation is vital. “We need to work closely together, because we have so much in common,” said Busalacchi. Tribal officials told Busalacchi that they appreciate the state’s efforts and hope the new agreement will help to provide improved roads and more jobs for tribal members. “You just don’t build a road in a community and not have the people in that community, part of it. Tornado damage across Racine, Kenosha counties

A tornado swept a path across Kenosha and Racine counties Tuesday morning. The tornado’s path apparently began in Kenosha county, moved north east through Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant in Racine County before dissipating in the City of Racine. Mark Gehrig of the NWS Office in Sullivan said the tornado was “at least an EF1″ which would mean wind speeds of 86 to 110 miles per hour. [Read more...]
