Lawmakers asked to take up disclosure bill

The Legislature will likely be back at the Capitol one more time before the end of the year, and a watchdog group is calling on lawmakers to act on a campaign finance reform measure when they do.

Legislative leaders have indicated they will come back to finalize state employee contracts sometime in December. When they return, Jay Heck of Common Cause in Wisconsin wants them to also take up a bill that requires third party groups running campaign ads to disclose their funding sources. [Read more...]

Over 106,000 deer killed during opening weekend

Hunters register a preliminary tally of 106,404 deer over the first two days of the traditional November nine-day gun deer hunt, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The preliminary count this year was up about 6.3 percent from last year’s opening weekend count of just over 100,000. [Read more...]

Five shot in opener for gun deer hunt

The DNR is investigating five hunting accidents involving firearms from over the weekend. All were non-fatal, according to the agency’s Greg Matthews.

The incidents occurred in Wood, Marquette, Marathon, Door, and Douglas Counties. Matthews says two involved juvenile shooters, three were during drives, and all five were while shooting at a running deer. He adds that three were between members of the same party. [Read more...]

Mom arrested in Madison after OWI crash

A Dane County mother is behind bars, after crashing her car. Krystal Harris of Sun Prairie is facing a wide range of charges. Police say she was drinking and two children, ages seven and three, in the car with her at the time of the crash. [Read more...]

DOR wrapping up consolidation effort

The state Department of Revenue is getting ready to shut down the last of several field offices targeted for closure in recent years.

Since 2007, the Department has been working to consolidate its field offices from 27 locations to just seven. Spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says that goal will be reached next month when the Rhinelander office joins the list of those that have closed their doors. [Read more...]
