UW student arrested in mom’s death

A UW Madison student has been arrested on charges that he murdered his mother this past summer. Twenty-four year-old Chase Boruch was taken into custody Monday night at his Madison residence. The murder occured up in Lincoln County, in northern Wisconsin. Boruch’s mother died after her car went into a lake in June. Investigators called the incident suspicious at the time. Buroch had told authorities at the time he was in the car with his mother and managed to escape. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department asked Madison police to make the arrest.

Motive unclear behind Marinette teen’s action

Police are still trying to determine what motivated a teen to take two dozen people hostage at Marinette High School. Police Chief Jeff Skorik said the gunman did not shed light on his motive for what became a five hour standoff.

Contracts become political football

Will lame duck legislators return to Madison, to ratify contracts with state workers? Outgoing Governor Jim Doyle noted last week that agreements reached recently between employee bargaining units and his administration do not include any raises, and that state workers have been working without a contract for two years. “They don’t have a contract, haven’t had one. We’re not trying to bind the new governor, this would fill out the two year period of time,” Doyle said. “It’s no secret the contract will just reflect the basics, which is no raises, (and) furloughs.” [Read more...]

Marinette teen holds classmates hostage

Nearly two dozen Marinette high school students and one teacher are safe, after a 15-year-old student held them hostage for about five hours yesterday.

The incident ended when the boy shot himself, and he’s now at a hospital.

‘Dollars for docs’ from pharmaceutical firms

Pro Publica, an independent, nonprofit investigative journalism group, found some 17,000 American doctors were paid for speaking to and consulting with other physicians regarding pharmaceutical products from January of 2009 through July of this year. [Read more...]
