A warning for holiday shoppers

If you’re using cash to do some quick holiday shopping, watch out when you head to the ATM. Ran Hoth with the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau says consumers need to look for ‘skimmers’ on machines, devices that allow thieves to copy your bank card.

The devices are usually some type of card reader that also has a camera aimed at the pin pad. When you swipe your card, the skimmer copies it and the camera catches you punching in your pin number. Thieves then have access to your account and are only limited by your balance. [Read more...]

Laid off Marinette Marine workers to be recalled

President Obama signed a spending bill Wednesday that will allow Marinette Marine to build ten new combat ships for the Navy. It may have taken longer than everyone had hoped but the new Navy contract will mean big things for the Wisconsin shipbuilder.

Deep discounts entice people to shop for gifts

Holiday shopping and retail sales are increasing, more so than experts originally predicted, despite the recession. Retail analyst Doug Johnson says, “The retailers are delighted to see how happy the shoppers are and how much they’re spending in their stores.”

Johnson echoes the statement from the National Retail Federation — that the holiday shopping season is surpassing all expectations. The Federation recently revised its retail sales forecast to 3.3 percent, up from 2.3 percent. Johnson says Wisconsin shoppers, historically, beat the national averages. [Read more...]

Not so cranky kids for Christmas

Some tips to keep younger children happy over the Holidays. Dr. Prasanna Raman, a pediatrician at UW Health Stoughton and an assistant professor of pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine, says keeping a routine will make a difference. “If you can make sure that the kids get their nap times and get their meals on a at least a fairly regular time . . . at least the kids won’t be as cranky, won’t be as fussy,” says Raman, noting that young children can’t really be expected to understand why the Holidays mean a change in their routines. Wisconsin’s prison population declines

It’s been getting a little less crowded in Wisconsin’s prisons. Department of Corrections Secretary Rick Raemisch says the number of inmates in state prisons was at about 22,000 at the end of fiscal year 2009, down nearly 1,800 over the past three years. The numbers reflect a three-percent drop in the population over the last five years.

Raemisch says it’s the result of efforts launched by Governor Jim Doyle nearly eight years ago, with a push for programs that hold offenders accountable and give them the tools needed to avoid re-offending when they get out of prison. [Read more...]
