Everything’s coming up Roses this week for one Wisconsin woman: she’s a Manitowoc florist in Pasadena to help put the finishing touches on many of the floats entered in the Tournament of Roses parade on New Year’s Day. Diana Dreger is in her fifth year of working on the floats, which use hundreds of flower varieties. “The orchids is one variety which just blows me away with how many we use, and how beautiful they are,” Dreger told WOMT. “It’s amazing. Christmas gift returns could spark sales
About 40 percent of Americans plan to return at least one holiday gift, according to the National Retail Federation. Madison-area retail analyst Doug Johnson says that percentage is increasing. He says the challenge for retailers — and honest shoppers — is the bad guy.

Badgers win Big Ten hoops opener
Jordan Taylor scored 22 points and Jon Leuer added 16 to lead the 24th ranked Wisconsin Badgers to a 68-60 win over 13th ranked Minnesota in their Big Ten opener at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers were out-rebounded 42-24, but Jon Leuer’s only offensive rebound with under a half-minute to play turned out to be the big one, a rebound that helped the Badgers preserve the win. [Read more...]
Church preyed upon during holiday
Parishioners in Chippewa Falls are hoping police will find whoever’s responsible for breaking into their church and stealing collection money. Father William Felix at Saint Charles Borromeo Church says he’s not angry but sickened that someone took the money that was locked up inside his church.

Mueller gets life in prison for girlfriend’s murder
The 37-year-old Brookfield man who strangled his girlfriend to death in his mother’s Fond du Lac apartment will spend the rest of his life in prison. Fond du Lac County Judge Robert Wirtz Tuesday sentenced Brandon Mueller to life in prison without parole plus 7 ½ years. The additional time was for burning the body of Renee Redmer and scattering her ashes.
During the sentencing Mueller apologized to her family and his own, and finally admitted responsibility in her murder.
