Ryan calls for return to fiscal responsibility (AUDIO)

Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) focused heavily on the economic problems facing the nation, as he provided the Republican response Tuesday night to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

Ryan, who serves as Chairman of the House Budget Committee, says he wants to work with the President to restrain federal spending. The Janesville Republican says no single party of person holds all of the blame for the debt facing the nation. [Read more...]

Giving a break to job creators

Democrats are questioning the effectiveness of a bill offering tax breaks to businesses for creating jobs.  The legislation approved in the Assembly Tuesday would offer a tax deduction of up to $4,000 for each job created by a business. However, Democratic state Representative Mark Pocan (D-Madison) says companies will see only a fraction of that money coming back. [Read more...]

Making tax increases tougher to pass

Lawmakers would need a two-thirds majority to raise taxes, under a bill approved by the Assembly Tuesday. The legislation would require a supermajority vote of the Legislature to approve any tax increase.

State Representative Tyler August (R-Walworth) says the bill reflects the desire of Wisconsin voters to see tax hikes stopped. He says the people want it harder to raise taxes in Wisconsin, as they watch spending continue to increase at the Capitol. [Read more...]

More special session bills head to Walker

More tax breaks for business have been approved by the state legislature, as part of the special session on jobs and the economy called by Governor Scott Wallker. Freshman Republican state Senator Van Wanngarrd of Racine co-authored a bill (AB 3) which provides a two year income and franchise tax credit for businesses that move to Wisconsin. “This is just a piece of the puzzle,” said Van Wanngarrd. “If there is a silver bullet that we had that would cure this, we’d all stand up, we’d all vote for it. Well this is part of the package that we need to put through, to be able to create a puzzle, that’s going to create a complete puzzle.” [Read more...]

Badgers’ Gudmandson named WCHA’s Defensive Player of the Week

Wisconsin Badger goaltender Scott Gudmandson has been named the WCHA’s Defensive Player of the Week for Jan. 25, 2011.  Gudmandson helped backstop a Badger sweep over Minnesota State.

The senior out of Sherwood Park, Alberta, set a career high last Friday (Jan. 21) for saves in a win with 37, including 16 in the third period as the Badgers pulled out a 3-2 win over the Mavericks at the Kohl Center. 

Gudmandson stopped 34 of 35 shots in last Saturday’s (Jan. 22) 2-1 Wisconsin victory.

Through 21 games, Gudmandson leads all WCHA goaltenders with a 1.76 goals-against average and .935 saves percentage in all games, ranking second and fourth in the nation.  In league games, his 1.94 GAA is second while his .933 save percentage is first.  He also boasts four shutouts on the year.
