Wisconsin health, county-by-county

An annual study is providing a snapshot of the health of each Wisconsin county. The UW-Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s county health ranking puts Ozaukee County as the healthiest, with Menominee County – home to Menominee Indian Reservation – at the bottom of the list.

The least healthy areas were major urban spots like Milwaukee and very rural areas such as an east-to-west band across Northern Wisconsin.

Pitch to ditch public financing

The head of the state’s elections oversight agency has suggested pulling the plug on public financing. Government Accountability Board director Kevin Kennedy noted Wednesday that Governor Scott Walker has proposed a change to the three dollar tax check off which currently funds public financing. Walker would have that three dollar check off increase the amount paid on taxes. “The governor’s made a decision this is probably not the best use of tax money, and I see no reason to have a token program in place,” Kennedy told the legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance which is getting agency briefings on the state budget.   [Read more...]

More thrills-and-spills at WI Film Festival

Now in its 13th year, the Wisconsin Film Festival will again have the usual dramas and comedies from around the world, but this year expect more adventure and horror genre films including the 30th anniversary of the Evil Dead, according to event Director Meg Hamel.

Altoona’s Wundrow named State Coach of the Year

Altoona’s Division 3 girls state championship run has handed WBCA Coach of the Year honors to head coach Ryan Wundrow.  Wundrow beat out Nicolet’s Corey Wolf and Newman Catholic’s Tom Weinkauf for the honor.

Racine Case senior guard Samantha Logic is the 2011 Associated Press Wisconsin girls’ basketball Player of the Year.  Logic averaged 15 points and 8.5 rebounds a game this season.  She’ll be in Chicago tonight for the McDonald’s All American game.

Joining Logic on the AP first team is Ashley Green from Nicolet, Kerry Gardner of Middleton, Alana Cesarz of Delavan-Darien and Heather Bowe of Eau Claire Regis.

Brewers wrap up Cactus League play

The Milwaukee Brewers wrapped up Cactus League play with an 8-7 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.  Newcomer Nyjer Morgan had two hits and Prince Fielder added a pair of doubles in the victory. 

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said his team is ready for the season to begin.

The Brewers will head for Cincinnati where they’ll open the regular season tomorrow (Thursday) against the Reds.

Boggs returns

Outfielder Brandon Boggs cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple A Nashville.  Boggs has until this morning to inform the Brewers whether he’ll accept the assignment or become a free agent.
