Matt Bollant

Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year for Region 6.

Bollant just completed his fourth season with the Phoenix, guiding it to the 38-year program’s first Sweet 16 appearance in this year’s NCAA Tournament.  Green Bay’s 34 wins is the most in program history.  The records dont’ stop there either.  The Phoenix achieved the highest winning percentage (.944), most points scored (2,666), most free throws made (539), assists (721), steals (442), turnover margin (+8) and scoring margin (+20.9).

Bollant is in some pretty good company with the Region 6 award.  Other Region winners include Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma and Tennessee’s Pat Summitt.

Judge reaffirms restraining order

A Dane County judge has restated her order that implementation of the budget repair bill should be stopped. Judge Maryann Sumi amended her restraining order Tuesday evening, as a legal challenge that claims the bill’s passage violated the open meetings law continues.

Sumi’s original order had enjoined action by the Secretary of State to publish the bill in the state newspaper; the final step for it to become law. However, the Legislative Reference Bureau published the bill online last Friday and Republicans contend it’s now official. [Read more...]

Huebsch responds to accusations of “power grabs”

Milwaukee Democrat Tamara Grigsby, a member of the Joint Finance Committee, questions Department of Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch (R-West Salem) about the removal of legislative oversight for things such as modifications to energy policy and medical assistance.

Grigsby further questions Walker’s Administration Secretary about removing the duties from the office of the Secretary of State. “How do you think that that’s legally appropriate?” [Read more...]

Appeals court overturns murder conviction

An appeals court has overturned a Wausau man’s murder conviction. The Third District Court of Appeals ruled that police illegally arrested Devin Felix, took statements from him and gathered physical evidence, including the murder weapon, without a warrant. Those statements and evidence have to be suppressed if prosecutors re-try Felix. No immediate word on if they’ll do that or whether court dates had been set in the case.

The appeals court ruled that police did legally seize Felix’s vehicle and evidence gathered after his landlord gave permission to search the apartment. Felix pled guilty to stabbing Nathaniel Davids at a house party in Schofield in September 2007. He had been serving a 28-year prison sentence prior to Tuesday’s ruling.

Judge orders separate counsel for La Follette (VIDEO)

Separate counsel for Secretary of State Doug La Follette, as legal wrangling continues as to whether or not changes to collective bargaining for public employees are in fact law. Judge Maryann Sumi made the suggestion after Department of Justice attorneys refused to ask questions on La Follette’s behalf in Dane County Court. “I think we have a problem. I think it is perhaps time to look at the possibility of allowing, of requiring the state to provide independent counsel for Mr. La Follette,” said Sumi.
