School employees open wallet to fill budget gap

A grassroots effort to raise money for the Janesville School District is off to a strong start. As the district faces a $13 million budget shortfall, school employees are trying to fill the gap with either a lump sum, which is a suggested donation of $300, or with a payroll deduction.

During the Save Janesville Schools fund drive Wednesday, organizer Mike Rundle says they saw generations contributions of more than $1,000 or a commitment of 5.8-percent of future salary.

Even workers being laid off like Shelly Maldonado are donating. Both [Read more...]

Several people called a local radio station about what was going on. Fond du Lac Deputy Police Chief Kevin Lemke got confirmation that fighter jets were training in the area. Lt. Colonel Jackie Guthrie, the Director of Public Affairs [Read more...]

Republicans want data collection stopped

Republican state lawmakers want to do away with a provision in the last state budget that requires police to collect data on the race of drivers and passengers during traffic stops.

The measure was intended to gauge whether law enforcement could possibly be stopping drivers because of their race, but police have been highly critical of the mandate because it has greatly increased the time officers must dedicate to traffic stops. Several agencies have say the extra steps to report the information add up quickly during the course of an officer’s day. [Read more...]

Braun signs long term deal with Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers announced the signing of All-Star outfielder Ryan Braun to a 5-year contract extension that will take him

Ryan Braun

through the 2020 season.  The deal also includes a mutual option for one additional year.  It’s the longest commitment to a player in Brewers franchise history.

Braun has started each of the last three all-star games for the National League.  He’s just one of five players in Major League Baseball history to hit 125 homers and post a .300 batting average over the first four seasons of his career.  The others are Joe DiMaggio, Chuck Klein, Albert Pujols and Ted Williams.  Braun also currently holds the franchise’s mark for highest career batting average at .308 and entered the 2011 season with 128 homers, eighth most in Major League history by any player in their first four years.

Since being called up in early 2007, Braun ranks 2nd in hits (734), runs (414), total bases (1,325) and Extra-Base hits (304).  He also ranks 6th in RBI’s (432) and is tied for 8th in home runs (133).

Braun is off to another great start this season, reaching base safely in all 18 games.  He currently ranks among the National League leaders in on-base percentage (5th, .471), runs (T6th, 13), home runs (T6th, 4), total bases (8th, 35), slugging percentage (8th, .625), hits (T8th, 20), batting average (10th, .357) and walks (4th, 13).

It’s the second long-term deal that Braun has signed with the Brewers.  He previously signed a deal on May 15,2008 that goes through the 2015 season.
