The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health completes its review of UW physicians who gave medical-excuse notes to protesters at the State Capitol during a huge rally. Sex offender’s move raises concerns
He’s no longer on the state’s public sex offender registry, but 29 year old Charles Patterson still is a lifetime registered sex offender. Town of Middleton residents were up in arms last summer, when Patterson was released to a home there. Elise Schaffer with the Dane County Sheriff’s Department says Patterson has since been released from state supervision, and has relocated to Madison. [Read more...]
Budget deliberations begin (AUDIO)
The legislature’s budget panel began work on Governor Scott Walker’s budget Tuesday, and Joint Finance Committee co-chairs Representative Robin Vos and Senator Alberta Darling, held a media availability prior to the session’s start. Vos pledged not to raise taxes and to reduce spending while focusing on core services – but added the state might not be able to afford everything that’s been done in the past. Vos said that “over the course of the next month it will become clear that while Governor Walker’s budget is a good framework, it’s not perfect. We have some changes that are going to be made to the budget, that we’ll roll out over time, that we think takes a good document and makes it even better.” [Read more...]
Reading task force meets
Governor Scott Walker’s reading task force has met for the first time. The Governor unveiled his “Read to Lead” initiative during his state budget address, with a goal of increasing proficiency among Wisconsin’s third graders. State Representative Jason Fields is a Milwaukee Democrat and a member of the task force. “The most confusing, perplexing part of whenever we discuss education is, how is it that we all sit in these rooms, but year after year nothing is done? It never changes,” said Fields. Members of the task force, which includes educators as well as legislators, suggested looking at what other states have down to improve reading proficiency in the early grades. Walker has suggested more testing and greater parental involvement, but he won’t mandate a course for the task force to follow.
Preventing rental property problems
With landlord-tenant issues near the top of list in complaints reported to the state Bureau of Consumer Protection, the agency has some tips for students planning to live off-campus in the fall.
Spokesman Brock Bergey says the excitement young people have in getting their first apartment may cause them to overlook what could be problems down the road.
