Breaking the Wisconsin Covenant

Just four years after former Governor Jim Doyle started the Wisconsin Covenant program, the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee has voted to do away with it.

The program promises students access to financial aid and a UW or tech college education, if they get good grades and graduate high school. State Representative Tamara Grigsby (D-Milwaukee) says it encourages kids to succeed and support should continue. [Read more...]

Pridemore introduces immigration bill

State Representative Don Pridemore has introduced an Arizona-style immigration bill. The Hartford Republican proposes a measure which, among other things, would prevent local governments from offering sanctuary to people in the U.S. illegally. The bill requires law enforcement to act when persons arrested on suspicion of a crime fail to provide proper identification within 48 hours. Pridemore’s bill includes potential penalties of up to $500 a day – if local units of government are sued for failing to comply with the law’s provisions. “Anybody who’s willing to come to this country and work hard and raise a family, this bill does not effect those people,” said Pridemore. “It’s people who come here illegally. JFC votes to save SeniorCare

Last week Democrats led by Representative Andy Jorgensen (D-Fort Atkinson) submitted the petitions urging Republican leaders to leave Senior-Care alone. [Read more...]

At least nine tornadoes suspected on Sunday

Wisconsin is pushing closer to an above average year for tornado activity. Officials say that’s after nine suspected twisters swept through the state on Sunday as part of a storm system that left massive devastation further south.

Meteorologist Jake Wimberly with the National Weather Service in Sullivan says the EF-2 tornado that hit La Crosse has been receiving the most attention, after it damaged nearly 200 homes and businesses. However, he says another twister spanned Monroe, Juneau, Wood, and Portage Counties, leaving a nearly 70-mile path of damage. [Read more...]
