Wisconsin has a new state budget

In signing the two-year $66 billion budget, Governor Scott Walker eliminates the debt saying “Republicans and Democrats alike have caused this problem.” He says “Unfortunately for all of us ‘honest budgeting’ was one of those areas where both political parties tended to look the other way.”

This controversial spending plan balances a $3 billion deficit without raising income or sales taxes, and Walker says it does not rely on one-time money, fund raids, or budgeting tricks and gimmicks. [Read more...]

Location change for budget bill signing

Governor Scott Walker’s administration has dropped plans to sign the budget at Badger Sheet Metal Works in Green Bay, following media reports that the executive at the company was convicted of felony tax evasion.

The announcement comes on the heels of a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Gregory A DeCaster was convicted in the 1990s of six counts of felony tax evasion. DeCaster is the current chief executive of Badger Sheet Metal Works, where Sunday’s signing was scheduled to take place. [Read more...]

Broad look at Racine’s infant mortality

A new comprehensive program is tackling the infant mortality crisis in Racine. The city’s infant mortality rate among blacks is among the highest in the world, exceeding a number of third-world countries. An African American baby born in that city is nearly three times more likely to die – before his or her first birthday - than a white baby.

Green manufacturing to net greenbacks

A program spearheading “green” manufacturing in the state is proving so far to be a success. Fifty-four companies are participating in a Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership pilot program, anticipated to generate five-year cost savings of $54 million, with a $1.75 million dollar initial investment.

Bucks dealing in NBA Draft, looking for offense (AUDIO)

The theme of the NBA Draft for the Milwaukee Bucks was to improve an offense that finished dead last in scoring last season.  The result was a three team trade and a draft pick that brings a number of new faces to Milwaukee.

The Bucks acquired guard/forward Stephen Jackson, guard Shaun Livingston, guard Beno (Bay-no) Udrih (OOH-drick) and the draft rights to forward Tobias Harris in a three-team deal with Charlotte and Sacramento.  As a part of the deal, the Bucks sent Corey Maggette to Charlotte and John Salmons and the draft rights to Jimmer Fredette (10th overall) to Sacramento.
