Packers training camp is underway

It’s estimated that nearly 2,000 fans showed up to watch the Green Bay Packers kick off their NFL training camp at Ray Nitschke Field.

Players get a ride!

Fans started lining up for the best seats before 3pm for the 7pm practice.  Kids lined the up to wait for the players to come out, hoping to give them a ride on their bicycles.

When the fans were let inside the gates to the practice field, they filled the bleachers in a hurry.  They were lined up 4 and 5 deep to get a glimpse of the action.

And because it’s the Green Bay Packers, the most storied franchise in the NFL, all the fans will be back tonight (Sunday) for a repeat performance.  And for those that can’t make it back, there’ll be others to fill their shoes.  It kind of reminds you of last year’s team.

Sherrod gets first chance at LG

With the free agent departure of left guard Daryn Colledge to the Arizona Cardinals, the Green Bay Packers opened training camp Saturday night with their first round draft pick, Derek Sherrod at left guard.

The move means 2010 first-round draft pick Bryan Bulaga says at right tackle, where he filled in last season when Mark Tauscher went down with a shoulder injury.

TJ Lang and Nick McDonald are also possible candidates for the left guard spot.  But the Packers threw the first opportunity to Sherrod.  After Saturday night’s workout, Mike McCarthy said there’ll be plenty of chances to go around.

The second team that lined up on the offensive line on opening night is as follows:  LT Marshall Newhouse, LG T.J. Lang, C Nick McDonald, RG Caleb Schlauderaff and RT Chris Campbell.

Packers underway, looking to go back-to-back

Since the NFL started determining the leagues best team by squaring off in the Super Bowl, a total of eight teams have won back-to-back titles.  The Green Bay Packers are looking to be the 9th.

Veteran wide receiver Donald Driver said it starts with attitude.  Driver said they must have the same attitude and approach as they

did a year ago.

Several things factor into a teams ability to repeat.  First and foremost is their attitude.  After winning the Super Bowl last year, is every player as hungry to win it again?  Are they as hungry as they were for the first title?  With other teams gunning for the champs, are they ready to handle everybody’s best game?  All questions that will be answered in time.

Injuries are a factor as well.  The Packers proved last season that they could get through a number of injuries and still win.  But key injuries are the key.  Not to diminish the loss of some of the players the Packers lost, but they didn’t see Aaron Rodgers go down.  They didn’t lose Clay Matthews or Charles Woodson or even B.J. Raji on defense.  For the most part, their offensive line stayed in tact all season and while TE Jermichael Finley went down for the year, Greg Jennings stepped up at wide receiver and has his best season. Packers training camp has night time flavor

The Green Bay Packers released their full schedule for 2011 Training Camp.  Packers’ fans will see plenty of night-time workouts too.

Training Camp Tradition

Thirteen of the 21 practices overall at Ray Nitschke Field will be under the lights, starting at 7pm.

With a theme of “Back to Football,” training camp opens up Saturday, July 30 with a 7pm practice start.  That marks the first of three straight days featuring a single night practice.  Night practices are also scheduled for July 31 and August 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16 and 17 at Nitschke Field.

Should inclement weather or any other factor force the team indoors, practices will be closed to the public due to space limitations inside the Don Hutson Center.

Packers release seven players

The Green Bay Packers released a total of seven players today.  The list includes:  LB Nick Barnett, LB Brandon Chillar, DE Justin

Chillar signed with the Packers in 2008 as an unrestricted free agent from St. Louis.  He played in 34 games with 12 starts during his three seasons in Green Bay.  He was limited to eight games in 2010 due to a shoulder injury after missing just seven games in his first six NFL seasons.
