Brewers Host Cubs

The Brewers open up a three game series with the Cubs tonight.  Chris Narveson gets the start tonight for the Brewers while Ryan Dempster gets the nod for the Cubs.  The Brewers sit a half game behind Pittsburgh and St. Louis in the NL Central standings.  The first pitch is set for 7:10pm tonight at Miller Park.

State impacts of federal default assessed (AUDIO)

Wisconsin would be able to weather a federal default – at least over the short term. The state would be okay for about three months. At the request of Governor Scott Walker, Department of Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch asked for default impacts from state agencies. “I asked them to report back to me this past Friday, the impact that a possible default by the federal government would have in their particular agencies,” Huebsch told a media conference call Monday. “As you can imagine, those that deal with a lot of federal money are going to be the most directly and immediately impacted.” [Read more...]

Governor signs first redistricting bill

Governor Scott Walker has signed legislation making changes to the state’s redistricting process.

The bill passed by lawmakers last week allows the Legislature to draw new Congressional and Legislative District maps before local governments finish their work. It also requires the state Supreme Court to appoint a three-judge panel to take up any court challenges brought against any redistricting maps. [Read more...]

Senate action could extend benefits

The state Senate will be on the floor next week. Republican Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says discussions with his members led him to call the chamber to the floor next Monday, in order to vote on amendment which will allow an extension of benefits to the long-term unemployed. Both the Assembly and Senate passed a bill last week, which authorizes the state to use federal funds to extend unemployment insurance benefits by 13 weeks. But the Assembly adopted an amendment which would restore a one week waiting period for workers starting to receive benefits. “Although it appears that there’s a lot of direct linkage between them, in the end the thirteen weeks is what’s important right now,” said Fitzgerald. Two die in Lake Winnebago plane crash

Two bodies were recovered from Lake Winnebago after a plane crashed about a quarter mile off the western shoreline around noon Monday. Fond du Lac County Chief Deputy Sheriff Mark Strand says one person was flown from the scene by Flight for Life and the other was taken to the Medical Examiner’s office. A woman’s body was recovered first and then sometime later a man’s. Strand didn’t say whether the aircraft was related to this week’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, but that typically there are crashes around EAA time. [Read more...]
