Kohl hopeful default can be avoided

Senator Herb Kohl said Friday that he’s hopeful a default by the federal government can still be averted. The Wisconsin Democrat said a debt ceiling and deficit reduction bill from House Speaker John Boehner has no Democratic support in that chamber. “Because it has no support from the other side of the aisle in the House, and it’s very partisan, it will come over here and get rejected,” said Kohl. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is working on a Senate bill. “It has been authored by Senator Reid, but I am hopeful that will be a Reid-McConnell bill,” he said, referring to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. On the defensive end of the game, balls could be caught either on the fly, or on the first bounce, for outs.” [Read more...]

Factoring institutional racism into infant mortality

Institutional racism is a reason why African-American babies die at a higher rate than white children, according to a Marquette University Nursing Professor. Clinical Instructor Kelli Jones says we can’t be afraid to look at racism as a cause for the disparity.

Jones is lecturing today utilizing the “Lifecourse” approach. In speaking to industry colleagues at MU’s College of Nursing conference, she says the issue needs to be examined beyond the scope of just prenatal care.

“The majority of what I’m talking about is looking even deeper at before we [Read more...]

Cracking down on child care providers who hurt kids

A family whose baby was sexually abused testifies at a legislative hearing about their experience. “On June 26, 2007 our granddaughter, who was 10 months old, was sexually abused at a child care facility run by our church. Her injuries were so severe that she required reconstructive surgery at Childrens Hospital.”

The facility was licensed by the state of Wisconsin; It is still licensed and that case is still unresolved four years later. [Read more...]
