House ready to vote on Boehner plan (AUDIO)

As the U.S. House of Representatives prepares to vote on a measure to reduce the federal deficit and raise the debt ceiling, a clear partisan divide remains over how to achieve the debt reductions, and even over how deep an impact a default on the nation’s debt would have on the economy.

Wisconsin congressman Reid Ribble is ready to vote on raising the debt ceiling. The freshman Republican said it’s a major compromise, but he’s voting for Speaker John Boehner’s deficit reduction plan. Passage will send the package to the Senate, as Monday’s deadline for raising the debt ceiling approaches. “I think it can happen before the Monday deadline, but if it doesn’t, it’ll be because Harry Reid chose not to,” said Ribble. “I have a lot of colleagues of mine who came here who said they would never vote for a debt limit increase, and today you’ll have two times where the House has voted to raise the debt limit in excess of a trillion dollars, with many Republicans who said they never would do it.” Ribble said he’s voting for Boehner’s proposal contingent on Boehner bringing a balanced budget amendment to the floor. Businesses asked to ban guns

The law that legalizes carrying a concealed weapon in Wisconsin is set to take effect later this year, but Jeri Bonavia of the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort says her groups is not backing off on its opposition to the measure.

The group is encouraging businesses to take a stand. Bonavia says they are calling on businesses to ban guns from being carried inside. She says similar steps have been taken by about 80-percent of the businesses in other states that allow concealed carry.

The law allows permit holders to carry hidden weapons inside a business, unless signs are posted saying they are banned. Bonavia says WAVE plans to run a statewide campaign urging businesses to put those signs up.

The law takes effect on November 1st.

Local landlords back Assembly bill

A number of landlords last night had their say – on an Assembly bill – at the Fond du Lac City Council meeting. They support AB 182, which would prohibit municipalities from placing delinquent utility bills like water bills on the landlords’ property tax bill.

Susan Behling told the Council it’s unfair to expect landlords to pay the [Read more...]

Brewers Win…Lose Weeks

The Brewers blanked the Cubs 2-0 on Wednesday night at MillerPark.  Zack Greinke struck out 9 in six and two-thirds innings worth of work.  The Brewers got a solo homer from Prince Fielder and a sac fly from Yuney Bettencourt in the 2nd for the games only runs.  K-Rod threw a scoreless 8th and John Axford set a team record with his 26th straight save in a scoreless 9th.  Rickie Weeks left the game in the 2nd when he turned ankle legging out an infield hit.  Initial X-rays showed no broken bones but Week’s will go on the DL and be out a while. The series wraps up this afternoon.  Shaun Marcum takes the hill for the Brewers while Randy Wells gets the start for the Cubs. They will throw the first pitch at 1:10pm. The Brewers have traded catcher Wil Nieves to Atlanta for cash considerations.
