Bielema Comments on Preseason Picks

The Big Ten Coaches had asked to stop officially polling the media to pick preseason favorites each football, season, but the media decided to do it on their own this year.  Th informal survey found the Badgers picked to win the new Leaders Division and head coach Bret Bielema was chosen as the league’s top coach.  Bielema says that, as always they don’t buy into preseason hype, because it doesn’t matter, but he’s honored that the Badgers are recognized.

Badgers Find NFL Homes

A handful of Wisconsin Badgers have found NFL homes.  Quarterback Scott Tolzein had numerous teams courting him but it looks like he’ll land inSan Diego.  Running Back John Clay and defensive back Niles Brinkley are going toPittsburgh.  Return man David Gilreath is heading to the Colts

WIAA Summer Baseball Tournament Begins

The WIAA State Summer Baseball Tournament begins today inStevens Point.  The quarterfinals are today with the semifinals and championship on Thursday.  Today’s quarterfinal matchups are as follows; Brookfield East vs. Marquette, Waukesha West vs. Franklin, Sheboygan Falls vs. Whitefish Bay, and West Salem vs. West Bend West.

Postal Service looks to cut back

The U.S. Postal Service says a growing number of its customers are paying for shipping online, drastically reducing foot traffic at many of its dedicated retail stores. As a result, officials say they are reevaluating the need for nearly 3,700 of its 32,000 retail shipping locations nationwide.

In Wisconsin, 41 retail offices are on the list of those that could be shutdown. Many of them are in rural areas, although five in Milwaukee are also being studied. [Read more...]

Recalls could break spending records

In just two weeks, voters in several state Senate districts will head to the polls to decide recall elections against six Republican Senators. A week after that, two Democratic Senators will face opponents in recall races.

As the dates of those races approach, UW-Madison political scientist Charles Franklin says a lot of money is being spent to get the message out to voters. Franklin says it could end up breaking spending records for previous state Senate races, due to the candidates and outside groups seeking to influence which party ultimately has control of the chamber.
