What US should do in Libya

As a new era of democracy looks like it will unfold in Libya, the US and international community should continue to support Libya’s Transitional National Council. That claim from UW-Madison Environmental Professor Samer Alatout.

“They (TNC) seem to be really understanding of what government, means what democracy means, how to handle the transitional periods,” says Alatout. He adds there are no guarantees on how the transition will take place.

Bill reintroduced on naming of DNR Secretary

There’s another attempt at the Capitol to change how the Department of Natural Resources secretary is selected. Lawmakers have reintroduced a proposal that allows the state Natural Resources Board to appoint the head of the agency, instead of the governor.

State Representative Janet Bewley (D-Ashland) says the change is needed because the DNR should not be tied to just the current administration. She says allowing the Board to name the Secretary to a four year term would allow for more continuity in state environmental policies, and would avoid the agency moving solely in the direction the governor wants to take. Storm cleanup continues

Work continues on removing downed trees in northwestern Wisconsin, two months after a July 1st storm that toppled trees covering more than 130,000 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Polk, and Washburn Counties.

Burnett County Sheriff Dean Rolland says there is a lot that needs to be done between now and this winter. Rolland says a lot of the fallen trees have been cut, but there’s no way proper snow removal in the area can be done until the ditches in the area are cleaned up. [Read more...]

Brewers bang out 17 hits in win over Pirates

second inning and going on to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-4 at P-N-C Park in Pittsburgh.

Casey McGehee capped off the 2nd inning outburst with his 10th home run of the season. 

Former Pirate Nyjer Morgan had 4 hits, 2 runs and 2 rbi’s and catcher Jonathan Lucroy added 3-hits to support pitcher Marco Estrada.  Estrada held the Pirates to 2-runs through 7 innings as he beat Pittsburgh for the 2nd time in 11 days.

The Brewers have taken 2 of 3 in the series and shoot for the series win later this morning (11:35am start) in the finale.

Fog delays 2011 U.S. Amateur

The resumption of the second round of stroke play at Erin Hills has been

delayed by fog.  The second round of stroke play resumed on schedule at Blue Mound Golf and Country Club.

Play was delayed by nearly 4-hours because of thunderstorms in the area yesterday and then eventually suspended by darkness around 7pm.  The entire afternoon wave of 155 golfers have yet to complete their second rounds.  When they do, the top 64 players will advance to the start of Match Play at Erin Hills later today.
