Brewers blanked by Pirates

Aaron Thompson pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his major league debut and Jason Grilli came on to win for the first time in nearly two years as four Pittsburgh pitchers combined on a five-hitter in the Pirates 2-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday at P-N-C Park.

Jose Veras and Joel Hanrahan followed Thompson and Grilli to close things out for the Pirates.

The Brewers suffered just their 5th loss in the last 29 games and maintained their 10-game lead on St. Louis atop the NL Central after the Cardinals lost to the Dodgers 9-4 in St. Louis.

Shaun Marcum suffered just his fourth loss (11-4) of the season, his first loss in eight outings since the all-star break.  Marcum allowed only a pair of sacrifice flies.  He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 6-innings of work, walking 3 and striking out 4.

The Brewers are off today.  They’ll open a 3-game weekend series against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park on Friday night.

Event focuses on democracy

Labor supporters go from the streets and into breakout sessions at the Democracy Convention in Madison. Mayor Paul Soglin kicked off the event reflecting on this year’s massive protests and continued fight against changes by Governor Walker and the Republican majority. He says until then the public was not paying enough attention.

“We cannot rest and assume that others are going to take care of our society,” says Soglin.

Lawmaker targets drug users in W-2

A state lawmaker wants to increase the penalties for W-2 applicants that fail a drug test. Under current law, testing is already required for anyone applying for the state’s Welfare to Work program who has a felony drug conviction. If they fail, their benefits can be reduced by up to 15-percent.

State Representative Dan Knodl (R-Germantown) worries that penalty is not high enough to discourage drug use though. He’s sponsoring a bill that would increase the deduction range to between 25 and 50-percent. The reduction would last for up to a year. [Read more...]

West Nile virus found in dead birds

The state has recorded its first cases of West Nile virus for the year. Diep Johnson with the state Division of Public Health says two dead birds reported to the state have tested positive. One was found in Dane County and the other in Waupaca County.

Johnson says the testing helps to identify where West Nile may be currently active in the state. She says it should serve as a warning for people to take precautions to avoid mosquitoes that may carry the virus. [Read more...]

Walker officials release health reform impact report (AUDIO)

Walker administration officials have released a report on federal health care reform impacts in Wisconsin. Health Services Secretary Dennis Smith said Tuesday that the study shows some 100,000 employees will be involuntarily dropped from employer sponsored health insurance due to implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). “The more employers drop, the greater the costs of this entire package will be,” said Smith. “Because you’re now substituting public dollars for private dollars.” Smith said that’s at odds with promises made by President Obama that people would be able to keep their insurance if they’re happy with it. “That promise was made here in Green Bay, of what the promise of what health care reform would be. And I think we’re now finding that the situation is going to look significantly different.” [Read more...]
