Grigsby regains consciousness

Dozens of people attended a prayer service in Milwaukee Monday for Assembly Democrat Tamara Grigsby, just as the word arrived that she had regained consciousness. The 37-year-old Grigsby was hospitalized in intensive care last week. She was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, but her aides have not said whether her latest illness is related to that cancer.

Senate Democrat Lena Taylor organized the prayer service at a church on Milwaukee’s northwest side and many of the city’s political leaders attended. Taylor said a Grigsby aide e-mailed her just before the service and the group cheered when learning that she’s conscious again.

Taylor said she last saw Grigsby at a legislative hearing before Thanksgiving, and she was struggling then. Milwaukee Assembly Democrat Christine Sinicki called Grigsby a “fighter” for everyone in Wisconsin and, “Tamara is not going anywhere without a fight.”

Grigsby is finishing her seventh year in the Assembly. She serves on the Joint Finance Committee.

Marquette falls from top 10

Following their loss to LSU last week, the Marquette Golden Eagles (11-1) dropped three spots to No. 13 in the ESPN coaches’ poll and four spots to number 14 in the Associated Press top 25 poll.

Wisconsin moved in front of Marquette in both polls, climbing to 11th in both Top 25 polls.

Making room for new tech

New electronic gadget and toys were under many Christmas trees this year, and if that new smart phone, mp3 player, or big screen TV is replacing an outdated piece of technology, consumers are being reminded about a state law that requires them to recycle their old electronics.

Thad Nation with Wired Wisconsin says there are places to do that all over the state, including retailers, Goodwill center and local government collection sites. The DNR maintains a list on its website of over 400 locations statewide that accept old electronics.

The main reason to “ecycle” is because of environmental concerns. The components in those devices contain toxic chemicals that should be kept out landfills.

For devices such as new smart phones or computers, Nation says it’s important to make sure you erase your personal data before recycling. Hard drives should be removed or erased and phones should be restored to their factory default settings.

It’s not just phones or television sets that need to be recycled though. Nation says just about “anything in your home with a plug” probably has components in it that should be kept out of landfills.
