A Wausau man has been sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of early release, for killing his mother as part of a plot to collect insurance money. A Lincoln County judge handed down the sentence Monday, after 25-year-old Chase Boruch was found guilty in November of first degree intentional homicide.
Prosecutors alleged Boruch killed his mother and made it look like an accident in order to collect over $1 million worth of insurance money. Boruch claimed during the trial that he found his mother dead after she choked on a piece of meat, then put her body in his truck and drove it into a lake so it would look like an accident.
Boruch, an Iraqi War veteran, blamed post-traumatic stress disorder for his crime, but Lincoln County Judge Glenn Hartley called him a “scary person who showed no remorse” while he carried out a calculated execution for money.
Lincoln County District Attorney Don Dunphy says Boruch was a greedy person who received an appropriate sentence. Dunphy says it was clear Boruch targeted his mother, thought about it for a long time, and took careful steps to make sure he would profit from it.

Boruch said he never planned the murder, but at some point lost touch with responsibility. He says he knows he did wrong and will have to live with that forever.
