Officials in Trempealeau County are investigating a fire that destroyed a home owned by Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI). The fire early this morning tore through a cabin located on property near Melrose.
A spokesman from Kind’s office says no one was there at the time and there were no reported injuries. The damage is still being assessed at this time and it’s now known if the structure is a total loss.
Officials have not yet confirmed what started the fire, but Kind’s spokesman says it’s believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. A band of severe storms tore through the region overnight, with hail and wind damaging mobile homes, knocking down a barn, and blocking area roads.
The Congressman is in the region today working with emergency management and fire officials to address damage caused by the storms.
