Holiday travelers hit the road

A lot of holiday traffic will be out on the roads this afternoon, with nearly 900,000 people expected to travel at least 50 miles to celebrate Independence Day.

Pam Moen of AAA-Wisconsin says those numbers are up four percent from last year. That’s the highest it’s been for the Fourth of July holiday in nearly a decade.

While some travelers will fly, Moen says over 700,000 will take to the roads to reach their destination. Many vacationers left over the weekend, but traffic volumes are still expected to be high today through Thursday as people try to reach their destination or get home.

Nationwide, AAA estimates over 35.5 million people will take a trip over the Fourth of July holiday.
