Teen cops plea deal in fatal crash

Prosecutors and the lawyer of a teen charged in a crash that killed three of her friends are pushing for five years probation. The special prosecutor in the case says that is enough time for Carly Ottery, 18, to get through college and prove she deserves a second chance.

“We don’t think that we have to send a young person like this to prison for a long time for them to understand what happened was horribly wrong,” says Winnebago County D.A. Christian Gossett.

Police say Ottery was driving at speeds of over 100 miles an hour in the February 4 crash that killed 15-year-old Sabrina Stahl, 16-year-old Katie Berg and 17-year-old Caitlin Scannel. Five other girls in the vehicle were also injured.

Ottery waived her right to a preliminary hearing last Friday in Fond du Lac County Court and entered a plea of no contest to three charges of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. It will be up to Judge Dale English to accept the plea deal.  A number of people are expected to speak at Ottery’s November 5 sentencing hearing.
