Former Governor Tommy Thompson is the preferred candidate among Republicans in the US Senate race, according to a new Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday. Eric Hovde takes a nice jump, while Mark Neumann and Jeff Fitzgerald fall behind. Nobody’s calling it quits yet; Poll Director Charles Franklin says it’s not over ’til it’s over. “I think things certainly can change for a couple of reasons. One is that, with the exception of the Hovde campaign, the other three have been relatively restrained in the size of their television advertising buys.”
Also, a significant number of likely voters say they are still undecided, and Franklin says those 25 percent will start making up their minds. So, it’s far too early to call this race over by any stretch of the imagination. “At the moment Hovde seems to have some momentum; Thompson still seems to have a bit of a lead; the other two candidates need to make up some ground. But with a rich source of 25 percent of undecided voters, I think it’s certainly still within reach to see some substantial movement in the campaign.”
The primary is a little over a month away — August 14th.
