The growing trend of allowing urban residents to raise chickens has run into a dead-end in one Wisconsin city. There will no backyard coops in Appleton. The city council on Wednesday night turned down a proposal to allow them, on an 11-5 vote.
Alderman Curt Konetzke said he received a lot of feedback on the idea, and it was overwhelmingly negative. Konetzke said he worked with the group City Peeps during the process, but did not take a stance on the issue.
The city’s public health department put together some strict rules, and people would’ve needed a permit in order to have chickens. Several Wisconsin communities, including Madison, Milwaukee, Neenah and Oshkosh, have approved chicken coop ordinances, while others have voted such efforts down.
