The Milwaukee Brewers chances at a wildcard playoff spot weren’t very good to begin with. Those chances took another hit on Thursday when the Brewers fell to the Miami Marlins 6-2 to gain a 4-game split in the series.
Marco Estrada gave up hits to the first three Miami batters and the Brewers found themselves trailing 4-0 after just two innings. That’s all Marlins pitcher Josh Johnson would need. He held the Brewers to 2 runs on 4 hits in 7-innings of work to earn the win.
The loss dropped the Brewers 7-games behind the idle St. Louis Cardinals for the final wildcard spot. They’ll open a 3-game series in St. Louis against the Cardinals tonight. The last time the Brewers played in St. Louis, they were swept in early August.
Every game is a must win for the Brewers now, starting with the Cardinals tonight.
Yovani Gallardo (14-8) works in the series opener against St. Louis right hander Kyle Lohse (14-2).
