With a name like Driver, teaming up with the DOT seems appropriate.
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver promotes the proper use of seat belts and child safety seats. The Super Bowl champion explains, his three kids are watching him and his wife when they buckle up every time they get into a vehicle. “And we want to set a good example for the, to let them know that when Daddy and Mommy are not around, that you wear your seat belt all the time. We have to make sure that every parent sets an example … because your kid is watching you.”
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation believes that reducing speed, staying sober, and buckling up can help reduce the number of deaths on the roads from more than 500 annually to zero.
Governor Scott Walker is helping to get the word out about the “Zero in Wisconsin” traffic safety campaign, specifically as it relates to kids. “The number one cause of death for kids from birth through age 12 is a car crash.”
Walker urges parents and guardians to know and understand the benefits of wearing a seatbelt and having kids in correctly-installed safety seats. “About 80 percent of all the car seats in Wisconsin are not installed properly.”
The DOT and the State Patrol say consistent and proper use of child safety restraints can be a matter of life or death.
An online video with Walker and Driver coincide with National Passenger Safety Week from September 16 through September 22.
