Hunters had a successful first weekend for the deer season. Preliminary figures from the state Department of Natural Resources show just under 135,000 deer were harvested during the opening two day of the nine-day deer season, which started on Saturday.
The total is based on call-in numbers and information from registration stations.
The DNR says it’s an increase of 19 percent from last year and the numbers were up in every region of the state.
The agency also reports there were three cases of gun-related hunting injuries under investigation in Columbia, Manitowoc, and Portage Counties. Military officials are also investigating a hunting-related firearms death on the Fort McCoy property.
The deer season runs through this coming Sunday, November 25th.
