The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau says there is no state law requiring a store to exchange or return an item, unless the item is defective or wrongly advertised. The BBB’s Kimberly Hazen says, however, stores are required to honor their written return but that may not always be clear.
“If it’s not posted or if it’s not on the receipt you do have to ask, and that’s part of being a good consumer,” she says.
Hazen says consumers beware, some stores have a restocking fee which can be up to 25 percent of the item.
When returning merchandise, Hazen recommends keeping the tags on, with the original packaging and bringing the gift receipt.
