The search resumes today on the Wisconsin-Minnesota border for a snowmobiler who authorities believe broke through the ice on a remote part of the St. Croix River.
Crews from Pine County, Minnesota; Burnett County, Wisconsin; and the National Park Service began an air-and-ground search after two other riders witnessed the man hit a large patch of open water. Searchers had to stop around 12:30 Sunday afternoon due to dangerous conditions.
The incident follows a fatal crash Friday east of Iron River. Bayfield County deputies say a 22-year-old Ryan Maly of Bryant died when his snowmobile overshot a corner and struck a tree. That happened at about 11:45 p.m. moments after he passed other riders in his group. Maly is the 11th person to die in Wisconsin snowmobile crashes this winter.
