DOT projects $63.5 million shortfall

The state Department of Transportation has released a series of proposed cuts aimed at addressing a $63.5 million gap in the state transportation fund, brought on by a decline in fuel tax collections.

The cuts include delaying work on portions of Interstate 94 and Milwaukee’s Zoo Interchange, along with over $7 million in cuts to the major highway program. Other proposals would cut $4.3 million in transportation aid to local governments and take about $1.1 million in funding from the Hiawatha passenger rail service between Milwaukee and Chicago.

The proposed changes come just as the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee gets set to vote on the agency’s budget for the next two years on Wednesday.
