A Town of Menasha police officer shot and killed a man at an apartment complex on Friday. Officer Jason Weber said the man was in his 60s, and had called 911 from the Scottsdale Apartments on West Calumet Street at around 5:00 p.m. The man claimed he was suicidal, and that he had a loaded gun.
Weber said two responding officers encountered the man in the hallway of an apartment building. The man refused orders to put the gun down, and he pointed it at the officers, one of whom fired two shots. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later learned the gun wasn’t loaded.
The officer who shot the man is a 17-year veteran of the department. The Winnebago County sheriff’s department is investigating, and as a routine, the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave.
