A 52-year-old Fond du Lac man is dead, after police say the van he was driving crashed into a bridge support column early this morning and burst into flames.
The van was reportedly westbound on Fond du Lac County Highway F at about 1:30 am, when it struck a bridge support running under Highway 41. Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig says the full size passenger was completely consumed by fire, to the point that investigators were unable to retrieve the VIN or identify the driver.
Police have since been able to identify the driver, but have not released his name. The victim was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Olig says there were no witnesses to the crash. It was only reported to police after people driving on Highway 41 above the crash site noticed the intense flames coming up from below.
He says inspectors have checked the bridge to make sure its structural integrity was not compromised by the crash.
