Marquette falls short in Tempe

Derrick Wilson’s driving shot in the final seconds was blocked by Arizona State center Jordan Bachynski and the Sun Devils held off the Marquette Golden Eagles 79-77 in men’s college basketball action last night.

The 25th ranked Golden Eagles fell behind by 15 in the first half but had a couple of chances to win down the stretch.  Jake Thomas missed a jump shot before Wilson’s shot was rejected in the end.

ASU’s Bachynski blocked seven shots for the Sun Devils (6-0).  He added 11 rebounds and 14 points.

Davante Gardner scored 18 points for Marquette (3-2).  After missing 36 of 40 three-point attempts against Ohio State and New Hampshire, Marquette made 8 of 23 in last nights loss.

The Golden Eagles also played without leading scorer Todd Mayo, out with a sprained ankle.

Arizona State shot 54% from the field and are off to their best start since the 1980-81 team started 7-0.
