University of Wisconsin students, faculty, and supporters rallied in Madison over the weekend. Hundreds braved bone chilling cold temperatures and high winds, to voice opposition to a state budget proposal that would slash $300 million in state funding for the system, while giving campuses more autonomy.
Faculty member Lane Hall called for vigorous protests in the coming weeks as state legislators meet on the issue. Hall urged those protesting to “shut it down” if majority Republican lawmakers and Governor Scott Walker fail to listen to them.
Other speakers warned of huge tuition hikes once a current cap on tuition is lifted, while others worried students would lose shared governance under the budget changes.
