Many University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty and staff will be offered an incentive to retire, as the university prepares to deal with an estimated $7.6 million reduction in state funds.
UW-Eau Claire Chancellor James Schmidt sent an email Thursday explaining the voluntary separation incentive program. Faculty and staff in certain departments ,who are at least 55 and eligible for state retirement, will be offered a one-time payment of 50 percent of their base salary.
Schmidt estimates around 325 employees will be eligible to apply. He said that he hopes voluntary separations will take care of most of the staff cuts the university will have to make, but there may be more.
Schmidt hopes to identify all staff cuts before July 1, so the campus can have certainty about moving forward.
